I hope you had a successful hunt. Whether you got your deer or not, I'm sure you would agree being in the great outdoors is a great time.

I happen to get lucky again. Our party hunts the same place it has for 35 years now. We used to harvest several deer every year, but times have changed. We are lucky to see a few deer, let alone get one. But it is the time with brothers, and friends that keeps us going back to the same place every year.

I heard what I thought was a deer breaking ice by the Rat River, so I grunted, with my new bone collector flextone call. He must have heard because within, 5 minutes he was coming right to my tree. He stopped at 15 yards, and looked around. I aimed, pulled the trigger, and Click. So, I cocked again, aimed, pulled the trigger and Click. The buck started putting scent on a limb above him, but got a little nervous and walked under the canopy of pine branches below me. I cracked the barrel, reloaded another 30:06 Remington into the TC Encore.

But, by then, I spooked him with the rattle of shells in my pocket, or he got wind of me. He jumped and started getting out of Dodge the same direction he came from. I snapped the barrel down and got a look through the scope to pick a spot I might get a shot. He entered, and I pulled.

He crossed in front of me out of sight. I thought I heard him crash a few seconds later. But, I couldn't convince myself of going and checking for several hours. I didn't want to spook a poorly hit deer. Fortunately, my shot was true and I did hear him crash after going 35 yards.

I was sure glad we got him. Only one other deer was seen on opening day.

I continued to hunt during the week at several other properties. It sure is difficult hunting the public land in Northern Wisconsin. The forests and swamps all seem to run together. It gets harder to find food sources, when there isn't enough habitat, from lack of logging. The deer could be feeding on browse just about anywhere.

Hope your hunt was good.
God Bless
Outdoorwiz--

Big Elk down

Recently my twin brother, Bart, returned home from a hunting trip to Wyoming. Got in extra early this am, after patterning several Toms. Got setup and called and had a gobbler respond several times. Never was able to get him to come in. Within a half hour he completely stopped responding.

So, on to another spot. Pulled off the road to locate and had 2 gobblers, one was very close. We quickly set up a few yards into the woods, but I believe we were busted by a hen again. I heard her after several calls, and the toms went the other way.

We tried to relocate and cut them off but to no avail. Well, this was like a broken record this week with the toms being all henned up. So, we called it a day.

Couldn't hunt on day 5. It was way too windy anyhow.

All in all we had a great time in the woods and saw many animals, including a lot of responding toms. Just no luck with getting them to come in. There is always next year. I may stay away from the middle season.

Outdoorwiz

2010 Turkey Season

What an awesome start to the Wisconsin Turkey hunting season.

Day 1

Perfect weather. Started out cool and very light winds. The sounds of the woods was just awesome.

Only one hen was seen by myself and professional guide and caller TI. However, we saw a host of other animals in the wild of Northern Wisconsin. To name a few, we saw: Deer, Bear, Fox, Grouse, Ducks, Porcupines, Morning Doves and heard a whole lot more.

We didn't see or even hear a Tom the first morning. By noon, we headed back to town and headed to work. Tomorrow's another day.

Day 2

Another great day to be up at 4:30 am and heading to the woods, not caring about my scent. Just being able to jump into some camo and head to the woods was quite pleasing. We traveled around to some favorite sites, and previous soundings of gobblers.

Our first stop produced a gobble and we were off. We parked and walked a few hundred yards into the toms domain. We set-up and started calling. Soon we realized we had two different birds talking. They didn't get any closer, so we moved again. 3 times we moved in on the birds. Some sexy hen must have been leading them away from her competition.

We got to a clearing and couldn't risk chasing, so we began to call. The Toms were only 100 yards away, but we couldn't get them to materialize. They were content to talk to us for 2 hours that morning. But, they wouldn't come to our call.

Day 3

For a day that was supposed to be windy and rainy, it was warm and overcast. Not much wind either.

We went back to get after the same toms again. This time we circled and cut them off, if they were going to do the same as yesterday. We made one small mistake, we assumed we had to get close right away. We jumped off the roadway and traveled through the woods after getting close. However, the birds were on the move very fast, right to us. So, fast a hen busted us as we set up.

We were able to call and get the gobbler settled down, but he wasn't coming after the danger yelps.

Well, ever day has gotten better. Can't I convince my mind that the sun is shining everyday, and that should make me feel the same every day.
Can't I make the choice every day, to be
thankful for a great God, world, and all the outdoors has to offer and be joyful and happy?
Sure I can, and so can you!!!!
We still have a lot of snow in NE Wisconsin, but the temps are climbing every day. Avg temp now is 31 degrees. Days are getting longer and March Madness is almost here.
I enjoy March and all the basketball that it brings, with the hopes for the golf season to right around the corner.
Ice fishing will be exciting in the weeks to come, but shacks will have to be hauled off the lakes in a few short weeks.
Hope your spring is around the corner! What ever outdoor activity you are looking forward too. But, enjoy the ones you have right now. What a great day to spend in the snow filled woods of northestern Wisconsin.

I found someone to go with me at the last minute. I want to thank my cousin Wayne for coming up. I pretty sure he enjoyed the day as well. His started a little earlier than mine. He had to travel over an hour to get here around 6:00 am Saturday . I hope he packed his gear the night before. I know I had to even though I got home late the night before because of a basketball game with my daughter.

I apologize for not having any pictures, but you'll have to trust me the day, was cold in the morning around zero, and the wind very light, if any. The sun came up and it was awesome being on stand when the woods came alive at around 7 am.

We decided to go to my father-in-laws 10 acres south of town, since I have heard many coyotes there while hunting for whitetails. After getting dressed up and guns loaded, we entered the short road to get to a blind stand and a tree stand. We decided to use them, since there were several sets of coyote tracks passing on the road quite early. We thought we may as well use the deer stands.

I placed the electronic, remote call between us just off the ground and faced it in the direction of a swamp nearby. Since I had never used a call before, I started with a short cottontail call, and gradually increased the length of the call, for a total of around 5 minutes of calling before I shut it off. We didn't get any response that we could tell. So, I repeated this another time. Don't know for sure how many times you should do this before moving on to another location. But, we spent less than an hour at this location. No coyotes responded, but I did jump a deer on the way in.

After getting stuck once and finding many more hunters on public land, we decided to go to another plot of private land that we got permission to hunt. I loaded the ATV and off we went. The snow was deep and we couldn't get back to the one swamp I wanted to try. We stopped and tried calling twice from a ridge that was several hundred yards from where I wanted to go. Nothing.

We went down the road further to a food plot and an elevated box deer stand. But, we got stuck again with the ATV. It took a while to winch ourselves out, and we made plenty of noise, so we really didn't know if we should even try. "Stranger things have happened" I believe the comment was. So, we climbed up into this huge blind to more-or-less rest. Like a dufus I left the call right under the stand. Yup, started calling and here came a small coyote heading around down wind and it stopped. I couldn't get my gun high enough over the side of the blind to get it in the scope. I noticed the coyote looked back, and sure enough a huge one was right behind. Wayne could get a shot at that one so told him to take it. MISFIRE@#@#@# Some much for reloads. The big one took off and I decided to blast at the smaller one while standing. I got a tree.

What a mess. Everything happened so fast. How did we mess that up? Rookies!

Oh well, we thanked GOD for the experience and tried the rest of the day to call more, but to know avail.

We got a lot of exercise, a lot of sun, a lot of laughs, and probably got hooked on doing this more often. So, we sure would take any advice. I do have a lot of questions about hunting these dogs.

Until next time. Hunt safe.

Coyote Hunt Eve

Well, I thought I had a team put together of 2 of my buddies, but found out last night that neither of them could make it tomorrrow morning. So, I had to make a few texts to my family memebers and see if they wanted to travel up and try this hunt themselves.
I just might have a 2-5 man team ready to take a stab at this wildly coyote thing. So that will be fun. I will find out later tonight exactly who will be coming. I also will have to come up with some sort of plan of attack.
Or we could just get up in the morning and wing it.
It sounds like there will be more participants than last year which is good. Weather looks like a low of 13 degrees tonight and high of 28 tomorrow. Partly cloudy skies and a NW wind from 5-15 mph should at least be good weather as far as I know.
So, I'll certainly blog about our tactics and results after the big hunt Saturday.
Hunt safe!

Crandon / Forest County Coyote Hunt

This Saturday is the 2nd annual predator hunt in the northeastern part of Wisconsin. Last year was a learning year, but still had a good turn out. The event is becoming quite popular with the recent increase in predators hanging around the already thinned out deer herd.
Whitetail hunters in the northwoods are not happy about the deer population at all. So, this may be the opportunity to take out any coyotes that are helping to thin the herd.
I'm planning on forming a team and giving it a go this year. I am certainly not an avid coyote hunter, but could become one very easily.
I'll keep you posted on the hunt.
Take someone hunting in your woods, and be safe!

Winter Activities in the North

Sorry for being out of commission for so long. I've been out of touch with the outdoor world for some time.

So, what winter activities do you take part in this time of year?

I've only been able to ice fish one time this winter. We had a pretty good cold spell here, and the fishing hasn't been that great on several of the nearby lakes. But, the sun has been shining quite a bit lately, and that is sure a plus in the winter.
No fish were caught by me, and only a few by my companions.
I have been able to get out and coyote hunt a few times. The other night the moon shined so bright I almost went out in the middle of the night. The temp was just a bit too cold for this aging body, or should I say mind. But we'll get it done soon.
As a matter of fact, a local Northern Buck Hunters Club is having a predator hunt in a couple of weeks. We seem to have a pretty bad predator problem in the north woods. We are attempting to help take care of some of that problem on our own. This will be the second annual event, and more animals expect to be taken this year.

Well, I certainly hope the fishing gets better. It can't get much worse. I also, will be posting more often on the outdoor activities northern Wisconsin. Good Luck in the Outdoors.

2009 Wisconsin Muzzy Season

Another Muzzy Season is over - 2009

In Wisconsin, we have a 10-day muzzle-loader season directly after the regular gun season.
Since the regular season ended so pathetically, I was hopeful to find some deer during the
muzzle-loader season. Well, it did turn out to be better, and I'm glad I didn't give up.

We ended up getting some snow, which did help the situation, as well. After hearing all the
horror stories around deer camps in the north woods, snow at least gave us hope to find
some tracks. And where there are tracks, there are deer.

We didn't find many, but we did find a few. The weather turned worse and we ended up getting the worst storm I can remember in a while. In one night we measured out approximately 14 inches of the white stuff. It was very fluffy, but still deep. And along with the snow came high winds. As you can imagine the storm was predicted for several days, so the plan was to hunt the night before and try to catch the deer moving and feeding before it hit.

This turned out a few deer, and I know of a nice buck that was shot that night. However, the hunter didn't recover his 8 point until the next morning, and by then the coyotes had eaten every bit of meat on it. That sure has been the story in the north woods. Anyone that has left a deer overnight, or who couldn't recover it promptly, had it eaten by bears, or coyotes, or wolves.

The next day brought high winds and 14" of snow. I planned to be in the woods on the last day of muzzy season. So, I talked a young hunter into going out. We pushed snow with my front bumper all the way back into the property we were hunting. We walked in knee deep snow, and weathered 20+ mph winds. But we knew this could be the day.

At app. 4:15 I saw a flash of a deer about 125 yards away. I waited for it to get to the next
lane of openings. As, I watched both lanes I notice movement again, and put the binoculars on
a nice 10 pt buck going in the same direction as the other. So, with plenty of time before
closing, and darkness, I was sure to get a crack at this nice buck.

What happened? They never showed up. At 4:30, I saw a deer walk back the way it had come. I'm sure it was the buck going back the same way it came. I don't know why, but my heart sunk. I thought for sure our perseverance was going to pay off. But, it wasn't meant to be on this last day.

At least I got to see a dandy buck. At least I got to get excited. At least it paid off to be
in the woods on the last day, again. What a treat.

Now what? Late bow season, I guess. Hopefully, I can fit in some late season archery around
working and some coyote hunting. Yup, I've changed the barrel to a 22-250 and I'm going to start hunting coyotes this winter.

I'll ask you to join in and do the same.

--Outdoorwiz

Another Disappointing Deer Season in the North

Well, I hope your gun, Whitetail deer hunt was a safe one. Mine was.

That is all I can say about my family's deer hunt this past season. It wasn't the only good thing, but it was pretty hard to find a deer. We did have a good time of laughing and discussing strategies, etc. But, we just couldn't see any deer.

The numbers here in Northern Wisconsin, must be way down. I saw 2 deer and heard a third one as I was getting down out of my tree-stand shortly after shooting hours on Opening Day. After that I have seen nothing on the stand, or during shooting hours. I did see several deer at dark while driving back to camp or home.

My younger brother did kill a small buck on day 2 of this season. I think that was one of the two deer he saw all year.

My nephew had a wolf come to within 5 yards of him while in a tree-stand. It bounded away and maybe never knew he was there. I know there must be several around the area where we hunt, because a fellow hunter found several fawn bodies and adult deer bodies in February of '09 while he was in that area.

So, I have cleaned the gun and changed the barrel on my Thompson Center over to a muzzle loader barrel. I enjoy being in the woods too much to completely stay away from hunting the rest of the year.

So, what is going on with the deer population in Wisconsin? I believe several things are occurring that are hurting our chances in the woods.

First of all, I believe there are more predators in the woods these days, than in the past. There are way too many bears, coyotes, and wolves in the state today, and no one wants to admit it. The DNR admitted underestimating the bear population recently. Thank You, but what makes us believe you can estimate the wolf population then? or the coyote? or the deer?

Second of all, we allow deer baiting in this state, and we shouldn't. Most people in the woods today couldn't even hunt if baiting wasn't allowed. What ever happened to scouting, calling, using scents and trying to outsmart a buck, and therefore, really being proud and deserving of a trophy buck once he was harvested?

How many different hunting tools does the DNR need to try and reduce the deer herd? We have so many seasons(tools) now. Let's start listening to the people that actually do the hunting not the politicians and insurance companies....

The deer are being pushed by the predators closer and closer to the towns and cities across this state. Baiting has congregated the deer into an area and allowed the predators to have a feast when they are found. We just keep adding more seasons and charging more fees to the hunter to control the deer herd.

Well, stop the baiting and start trying to manage the predators better, and let the hunters manage the deer herd.

Let me apologize for the tone of this blog, but this was obviously the talk of the hunt this year in many if not all camps.

I hope you continue to enjoy the outdoors. I know I will. Good Luck with the muzzle loader.

--Outdoorwiz

Buffalo County Hunting in 2009

What a great 6 days of bow hunting!

Not only the hunting. but the scenery was awesome too. I forgot hot nice it was over in that part of Wisconsin. I'm from Northeastern Wisconsin. We don't have the sudden elevation changes like they do. They sure have the better food sources for the great deer herd over there, that is for sure.

Several of the party arrived on Saturday and set a few stands on a piece of property that produced last season. I wasn't along last year, but the place to be was a pine tree plantation surrounded by corn and bean fields. We put the stands and then unpacked our gear at the house we stay at. We then wanted to find some other properties and the land owners to see if we could expand our hunting area for the future. We saw 33 deer just riding between properties, as the day was coming to a close. Seeing that many deer was promising.

Our first morning out my brother took a doe with his crossbow. It was his first time using it and wanted to make sure he could hit something, besides we are in a herd control unit and needed to harvest some does. At around 8:10 I noticed a deer to my right maybe 80 yards away. I looked through my binoculars for a few minutes, hoping to find movement and get a fix on his direction. When I turned to my left that deer had already passed 25 yards in front of me and almost made it past without me seeing it. I never heard a noise. It was a buck but I didn't get a good look. It wasn't a shooter. At least not on the first morning.

I waited a few seconds, and then used my doe in estrous can call. Within several minutes that buck and circled and came in from dead down wind. It came over a hill looking just as proud as could be. Majestic, was the word that came to my mind as the sun glimmered off the white rack. He came down to the trail app. 30 yard away. He turned and circled back the way he came from. I decided to get a picture with my camera. It was a broken off 8 pt or small six.

He heard me start the camera, and scuffling around but let me get a photo at about 45 yards. Then he knew something was us up, and bounded off not alarmed too badly.

I knew right then and there, I had to keep my eyes peeled. The leaves were wet and with the wind, you would never hear anything coming before you could see it. I had two does come past in the evening on that same trail behind me, and I would probably would have never seen them had not my hunting partner texted me they were coming.

Well, I passed on that deer and really didn't see a lot on that property. But, the other property we hunt was heating up. The other guys in our party were seeing bucks like crazy. I think they saw 20 bucks in one day. Anyhow, we all decided to concentrate our efforts over there the next few days.

I did pass on a fork horn on my second to last day hunting. And also on some does the last day. But, I had a great last day. I shot at a coyote while hunting on the ground. I saw a rooster pheasant walking through woods, and I walked up on a bedded doe. Now that was an experience.

I was on my knees for an hour-and-a-half trying to get a shot at a bedded doe. The wind was in my face and it was noisey, so she didn't know I was there. After sometime, I texted my brother and we tried to get her up and move to my left so I could get a shot. But, as usual she bolted the other direction. Still, what a great hunt. I was with-in 14-15 yards of here while she rested for over an hour-and-a-half..... My poor legs!

Anyhow, all told I believe the group saw 47 bucks for the week. We passed on 3 or more. We had 4-5 clean misses. We killed one doe and a nice 8 point. But the best part: is the friendships we made while there and the outdoors we enjoyed. It is a different land sturcture, and it takes a lot more skills for shooting.

Before I go again, I'll make sure I'm in better physical shape. And, I'll practice longer and more severe down sloping shots with my bow.

So, thanks Buffalo, and we'll see you next fall, if not later this year.

Outdoorwiz.

It's Time to Bow Hunt

Most years I would have probably been out bow hunting by now, but I have been rather busy and look forward to a productive hunt all the same. It's late October and the leaves are starting to fall pretty good, so visibility won't be an issue. The temperatures have been nice, but we have been getting quite a bit of rain as of late. I'm not complaining, we sure could use the moisture.

I put out the game camera several weeks ago to see what might be roaming around the 10 acre parcel of land that my father-in-law allows me to hunt. I have several stand locations that we all share, and keep up. I went to take down the camera a few days ago, and shot a grouse while kneeling by the tree my camera was on. The device said I had 7 events or images recorded, but when I got home the only picture on the card was the one I'm showing here. A nice clear, sunny picture of my arm. Oh well, I left the camera and picked it up today. Still no deer wandered by this location.

No cause for alarm, but all the same, I'm glad I'm packing for a trip to Buffalo County. I'm headed for the best big buck producing area in the past ten years nation wide. That alone gets you excited about what could become the trip of a life-time. You never know what is going to happen when you're in the woods. Maybe this year it's my turn to see, film, or harvest a nice, old, scrapy, buck.

So, I'm checking my gear and getting ready to pack the truck and head out this Saturday morning. We have to talk to a local landowner out there and see if he would allow us to hunt on some of his land. My brother has taken a lot of time building relationships with several landowners out there, and we want to continue to respect and appreciate their lands. We're planning a 5 day hunt, so I'll hopefully have more photos and progress reports, maybe even during the week, if I can find internet service out there.

Making sure your gear is in good shape is a must before your trip. You really don't want any surprises in the field. So, wash the clothing, check your boots, stands, releases, calls, scents, broadheads, bows, and arrows. Make a list. That's what I do. From my sleeping bag to my toothbrush. I was a boy scout, so I'm always prepared. If you need some gear or need to treat yourself to your early Christmas present. Check out discountgolfstuff.com. This site has a hunting, camping, fishing page that covers all kinds of equipment and outdoor gear.

But most of all be safe. The part about hunting I like the most is the time with family and friends. Just getting together and laughing and taking strategies and telling hunting stories makes the trip. Harvesting a nice animal is a bonus! Well, I have to get packing. At least most people I've talked to said they had seen quite a few birds. Can't say they shot their share, but I'm supposing they did. I know I didn't get the time to hunt grouse too much, but I do remember having a nice
meal or two.

2009 looks like it is going to be a good year as well. Right about now I start to get a little itchy for getting some bird on the table. So, I'll be throwing the gun in the truck, just in-case I can take the back road home from work and stop by a favorite walking trail to scare up a few. I always look forward to that first grouse that scares the heck out of me when it takes flight. It's always when I least expect it. But, I still manage to get a few shots off, even if its just to get
the cobwebs out.

I haven't had a dog to hunt with for about 7 years now, I think. But, this time of year makes
me wish I had old Payne again. Even if he tried to get them on his own once-and-a-while.
It was sure fun training him and watching him work. Hopefully, I'll get another hunting dog in the near future.

The leaves should be falling a little more over this next week, so hunting will seem a little
more productive shortly. Up until now it's been too thick to get good shots off, so most of the
time you're just knocking down the brush and educating the birds.

I never made it to the deer stand last weekend. Got the bow to the shop to have it looked over, but haven't shot it yet.

Maybe this weekend will be the time for me. I'm going to make an effort to get out and hunt something.
Ducks? Grouse? Whitetail? I'm not going to be picky, I'm going. Sometimes you just have
to make the time or you won't go.

Hunting is therapy. Get out and get some stress relief. Get out and enjoy this great country.
Get out and enjoy your great state. Where-ever you're from, enjoy it. Take the time to notice all the miracles going on around you.

Until next time.

Be safe

-Outdoorwiz

It's that time of year!

Fall is here in Wisconsin. Man I love the smell of Fall.

That means hunting!

I haven't been out in the woods, yet. But will hopefully be able to get some scouting cameras out in the woods this weekend. Just walking and seeing the deer trails, and smelling the falling leaves gets me excited, and anticipating the wonderful therapy I get while sitting in a tree stand. The sounds, or the peace and quite, make the work week a little easier to take.

Then, comes getting the bow equipment tested and sighted in. That can't be over-looked. I don't want to be writing about any shooting errors due to equipment. But, if you're a bow hunter you know all the things that can and will go wrong while chasing your game. But, that's hunting.

I generally can't get away until the end of the month to start locating a whitetail buck. This year won't be any different, I'm afraid. I do hope I can make it this year with my brothers and friends that take a 5 day trip to the western part of the state to chase some really big deer. I wasn't able to go last year. That part of the state produces some of the best racked bucks in the country. I think I read somewhere that, over the past 10 years, Wisconsin has produced the most record book bucks in the country. And that would mean this area of Wisconsin is producing most of them. So, just being there makes me shiver.

I better start getting in shape, just in case I can make it this year. November will be here sooner than you know it.

I hope your getting ready to enjoy the great outdoors this fall. Maybe you already are. If so, let me know how it goes. I look forward to hearing about all your hunting adventures.

By the way, check the site out at discountgolfstuff.com, they too, have a hunting and fishing passion along with several others. You can share your photos of your outdoor activities with them as well.

Good luck hunting, Stay safe!
